Settings – Most of your website’s settings can be located through the settings area. The settings area is located in the backend or dashboard. You can find most plugin settings here also.
There are six main configuration pages in WordPress: General, Writing, Reading, Discussion, Media and Permalinks. After you have installed WordPress, it is in your best interests to configure WordPress the way you want it.
The WordPress Address URL is where WordPress is currently installed. In the above example the WordPress files were installed in the root directory digitalminds.ca. The Site Address URL is the location on your website where you want your WordPress installation files to be viewed online, in most cases this is going to be the same as the WordPress Address URL. You should not alter these two setting. or your website will not run.
The email address is the address in which you will receive notifications of new user registrations, and other administration related emails.
The next option in the general settings area is whether anyone can register on your website. If you need visitors to register on your website for leaving comments, or if you have a forum on your site you will probably want to keep registration open. You also need to choose what type of role new users are assigned by default.
In most cases, new users should be set up as subscribers so that they do not have permissions to write posts (contributors) and publish them (authors). You should create accounts manually (Users->Add New) for contributors, authors and editors. You also have the option to disable open registration and create all your user accounts manually.
One of the problems with WordPress is it is often prone to spam. That is why new users that register on your website should be give the role of subscriber.
If you want to keep registration open, you can install a plugin (WordPress program) such as Akismet that helps you to fight spam.
Lastly, you should choose your timezone, date format, time format and day that a week starts on. The timezone that you choose will determine what date and time are recorded when a post, page or comment is published.
